Literacy Volunteers of Somerset County
The mission of Literacy Volunteers of Somerset County (LVSC) is to promote literacy throughout the community by providing student-centered tutoring and literacy programs for adults so that they may function more effectively in their daily lives. Their mission is founded on the belief that the ability to read and communicate in English is imperative to leading a productive and functional life, and is essential for the protection of individual freedom and equality of all people.
The website is critical to their ability to communicate services to students, recruit and support volunteers, enroll volunteers and students, and to educate and attract funders.

While LVSC had a website before, it was on a very outdated version of Joomla, and was a pain to update. Rather than migrating the site to the newest version of Joomla, we decided to scrap the whole thing and start over.
Through a thorough UX research process, we designed and developed a website that:
- informs people about LVSC's mission & impact
- encourages online donations & event attendance
- increases volunteer and tutor engagement & enrollment, and
- connects potential students with services.
The site template was coded from scratch, using mostly core components and template overrides, and was built to be easy to update. Very few front-end components were used. The biggest challenge was that LVSC uses a donor management solution that does not offer any integrations or embedding, besides iframes. This will remain the biggest UX challenge until either the platform integrates with something like Zapier, or if LVSC decides to migrate to another platform.
Beyond the standard site content, this site also features a way for students and tutors to collect their favorite resources, a portal where they can log in and connect, and an integrated form for tutors where they can report on their students process in a more efficient way.
