Vokoloko.cz
Vokoloko.cz is built on RSS—a time-tested, understated standard of the open web. RSS is a machine-readable feed of a site's latest articles, containing the title, link, and publication date. A website hosts it at a fixed URL, allowing anyone to fetch it regularly without registration or API keys.
RSS and Atom are the bedrock of web information retrieval. News readers, aggregators, media monitoring services, and archives all rely on them. Every podcast runs on RSS too. It is an open, unowned standard that has worked for over twenty years at zero cost to anyone. Eliminating it isn't just removing a technical detail—it removes the only universal way to receive updates without a middleman.
The most reliable sources are often municipal and regional websites built on open-source systems like Joomla or WordPress, which issue RSS feeds automatically and without special requests.
Vokoloko.cz runs entirely on Joomla 6.x and PHP 8.3 on standard web hosting, requiring no complex infrastructure. Rather than a template slapped onto a third-party service, it is a custom extension package that takes full advantage of Joomla's native architecture.

Reclaiming the Open Web with Joomla 6 & RSS
At Linelab, we wanted to explore whether a modern regional news service could be built around open web standards instead of social networks, advertising, and user tracking.
Vokoloko.cz is a non-commercial regional news aggregator that collects RSS and Atom feeds from municipalities, cultural institutions, and other public sources into a single, simple timeline.
Vokoloko runs on Joomla 6.x and PHP 8.3 on standard web hosting, without SaaS dependencies or a complex cloud infrastructure.
We developed a custom Joomla component responsible for:
* RSS/Atom feed processing
* regional categorization
* full-text search
* archiving
* filtering and automated synchronization
Feed processing runs through native scheduled tasks, while articles are stored locally for fast access.
AI was used as a development assistant throughout the project.
The developer remained responsible for architecture, database design, security, coding standards, testing, and final decisions. AI helped with debugging, refactoring, and exploring implementation alternatives.
Importantly, AI is not part of the production system. Vokoloko makes no AI API calls, meaning there are no per-request AI costs or external AI dependencies.
Privacy First
Vokoloko was designed with minimal external dependencies:
* No advertising or user accounts
* No Google Analytics or Meta Pixel
* No unnecessary tracking
* No external fonts or icon libraries
* User preferences remain in the browser
The result is a lightweight Joomla application built around open standards, local data processing, and user privacy.
Vokoloko is an experiment in combining Joomla 6, RSS, custom development, and AI-assisted programming to build a modern web service without a large technology stack.
